Where the Ten-Year Cycles Come From

Luck Pillars are counted from your Month pillar through the sixty stem-branch cycle, either forward or backward. Two things decide the details.

Direction depends on the polarity of your Year stem together with your gender: yang-year males and yin-year females run forward, and the other two combinations run backward. There is no judgement in this, it is simply which way the count goes.

Starting age comes from how far your birth moment sits from the nearest solar term boundary, measured in the direction your pillars run. The traditional conversion is that three days of that distance equal about one year of life, which is why a starting age lands on something like 7 years 4 months rather than a round number. Because it depends on the solar terms, an accurate birth time and a true-solar-time correction change it.

After the first pillar begins, each following pillar takes over ten years later. The strip below shows the eight pillars of our example chart.

How to Read the Pillar You Are In

A Luck Pillar is read the same way as a natal pillar: the stem on top, the branch below, and both measured against your Day Master.

The stem is the quickest read. Run it through the Ten Gods and you get the flavour of the decade: a Direct Officer period tends to bring structure, responsibility and visible position, while a Hurting Officer period tends to bring expression, friction with authority, and the urge to do things your own way.

The branch usually matters more, because it interacts with your natal branches. A Luck Pillar branch can clash, combine, or harm one of your four, and those interactions are where practitioners look for the timing of real change. A clash with your Day branch, the marriage palace, is read differently from a clash with your Year branch.

Then there is the element question. If your chart is short of an element and a decade supplies it, that decade is usually read as easier; if a decade piles more of what you already have too much of, it tends to be read as harder. This is why the balance of the five elements has to be settled before the pillars mean anything.

Annual Pillars on Top

Inside each decade, every calendar year has its own stem and branch, called the annual pillar (流年 Liu Nian). It acts on top of both the natal chart and the current Luck Pillar, which is why practitioners read the decade first and the year within it.

The useful question is whether the year agrees with the decade. A year that reinforces a supportive Luck Pillar tends to be where things actually happen; a year that clashes with the pillar you are in is where the tension of that decade shows up.
