What Is a Day Master in Bazi? (And How to Find Yours)
You just saw the words “Day Master” on a bazi chart, and now you want to know what they mean. Here is the short answer: your Day Master (日干 Ri Gan) is the single character that represents you in your chart. It is the Heavenly Stem sitting on top of your day of birth, and everything else in the reading is measured against it.
Bazi (八字), also called the Four Pillars (四柱 Si Zhu), is a Chinese system that maps your birth moment onto eight characters. Out of all eight, one is the anchor: the Day Master. It is always one of the ten Heavenly Stems (天干 Tian Gan), and each stem carries one of the five elements (五行 Wu Xing) in a yin or yang form. Where the Day Master Sits in Your Chart
A bazi chart has four columns, called pillars: the Year, the Month, the Day, and the Hour. Each pillar has two characters stacked on top of each other. The upper character is a Heavenly Stem, and the lower one is an Earthly Branch (地支 Di Zhi).
Your Day Master is the Heavenly Stem at the top of the Day pillar. The Earthly Branch below it is your Marriage Palace, the part of the chart traditionally read for your spouse and close partnership. So the Day pillar does double duty: its top character is you, and its bottom character is your relationships.

How to Find Your Day Master
There are two ways to find yours. The easy way is to use a bazi calculator: enter your birth date, time, and city, and the tool returns your four pillars with the Day Master marked. The hard way is to look it up by hand in a traditional Chinese almanac, which means converting your date into the classical lunar and solar-term calendar. Almost everyone uses the calculator.

Each Day Master belongs to one element, and the elements relate through two cycles: a generating cycle (生 Sheng), where each element feeds the next, and a controlling cycle (克 Ke), where each element restrains another. Wood Day Masters. Jia (甲) is the tall tree: upright, principled, and happiest when building something lasting, though it can be inflexible. Yi (乙) is the vine or grass: it bends without breaking, adapts to people and situations, and gets its way through patience rather than force.
Fire Day Masters. Bing (丙) is the sun: bright, sociable, and generous with its warmth, sometimes to the point of burning too hot. Ding (丁) is the candle or lamp: quieter and more intimate, thoughtful, and steadily warm toward the people it cares about.
Earth Day Masters. Wu (戊) is the mountain: solid, reliable, and protective, the friend everyone leans on, though it can be stubborn. Ji (己) is garden soil: nurturing and practical, good with detail, and quietly resourceful in getting things to grow.
Metal Day Masters. Geng (庚) is the axe or raw ore: decisive, direct, and drawn to fairness and action, sometimes blunt. Xin (辛) is jewelry or jade: refined, precise, and sensitive to quality and beauty, with a sharper edge under the polish.
Water Day Masters. Ren (壬) is the ocean or river: dynamic, resourceful, and drawn to the big picture and new horizons, occasionally restless. Gui (癸) is rain or dew: gentle, intuitive, and imaginative, working quietly and often keeping its depths private.
These are tendencies, not verdicts. Your Day Master is a starting point for personality, not the whole story.
How the Day Master Connects to the Ten Gods
Your Day Master never stands alone. The other seven characters each relate to it through the Ten Gods (十神 Shi Shen) system, based on the same generating and controlling logic: characters of your own element are peers, the element that generates you is your resource, the element you generate is your output, the element that controls you is your authority, and the element you control is your wealth.
One quick read from our example: the Day Master is Xin (辛), yin Metal, and the Hour stem is Ren (壬), yang Water. Metal generates Water, so Ren is the Day Master's Hurting Officer (伤官 Shang Guan), a character of expression and skill. Example: Reading One Real Day Master
Back to our chart: Geng Wu, Ren Wu, Xin Hai, Ren Chen, a Xin (辛) yin Metal Day Master born in a Geng Wu year. The Year stem is Geng (庚), yang Metal, the same element as the Day Master but the opposite polarity. That makes Geng a Rob Wealth (劫财 Jie Cai) to this person, a character that traditionally points to peers, siblings, and competitors who share the same resources.

What is my Day Master?

Does my Day Master change every year?
No. Your Day Master is fixed at birth and never changes. What changes over time are your Luck Pillars (大运 Da Yun), the ten-year periods that move across your chart, and the annual pillars for each calendar year. Those shift the backdrop, but the Day Master that represents you stays the same.
What if I do not know my exact birth time?
You can still find your Day Master. It depends only on your birth date, not the hour, so an unknown birth time does not affect it. The birth time is needed for the Hour pillar and a few time-based details, but your Day Master will be correct either way.
Which Day Master is the best?
None of them. There is no strongest or luckiest Day Master. Each of the ten has its own strengths and blind spots, and a real reading depends on how the whole chart supports or challenges your Day Master, not on the stem alone. A weak looking Day Master in a supportive chart can be more comfortable than a strong one in a harsh one.
